Alfred Johnston

Alfred G. Johnston of Roscoe, NY, a retired owner of Johnston and Rhodes Bluestone Co. East Branch, NY, and a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, August 20, 2015 at the Roscoe Regional Rehab. and Residential Health Care Facility, Roscoe, NY. He was 93.

The son of the late Thomas David and Elizabeth Becker Johnston, he was born February 15, 1922 in Horton, NY.

Alfred proudly served Our Country in the US Navy during WWII; he was a communicant of Gate of Heaven Church, Roscoe, NY and a former parish council member; he was a former commissioner of Rockland Hose Company # 1; a former member and past president of the Roscoe Kiwanis Club; a past president of the Building Stone Institute; a former member of the Board of Directors of the Twin Village Golf Course, Roscoe, NY; and a former member and past president of the Roscoe Central School Board of Education.

Survivors include one son, Peter B. Johnston and his wife Helen of Roscoe, NY; two daughters, Jane Balkam and her husband Cliff of Bethesda, MD and Mary Austin and her companion Anthony Zangla of Roscoe, NY; seven grandsons, Peter Brian Johnston, Daniel Johnston and his wife Katrina, Matthew Balkam, Andrew Balkam, James Balkam, John Balkam, and Michael Austin; three granddaughters, Lindsay Austin, Mary Kate Johnston, and Danielle Austin and her husband Hesham Ghoneim; and five great grandchildren.

He was predeceased by his wife, Esther Robinston Johnston on December 21, 2004; one grandson, Timothy Johnston; and two infant grandsons, Patrick and Matthew Johnston.

Visitation will be Sunday, August 23, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM in the Harris Funeral Home, Railroad Ave. Roscoe, NY.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, August 24, 2015 at 11 AM in the Gate of Heaven Church, Highland Ave. Roscoe, NY. Father Edward Bader will officiate.

Burial with military honors will be in the Riverview Cemetery, Roscoe, NY.
