Alice Walter

Alice C. Walter, formerly of Loch Sheldrake, a retired teacher and guidance counselor at Fallsburg High School, died Wednesday, November 4, 2015, at the Brookdale Mountain View skilled nursing facility in Denver, CO. She was 97 years of age.

The Daughter of the late Samuel and Mae Carswell, she was born August 25, 1918, in Little Britain, New York. She started her teaching career in the one-room schoolhouses around the Loch Sheldrake area, and later taught school in the Fallsburg Central School system, teaching grade school and then becoming a math teacher. She then became the high school guidance counselor until her retirement.

Alice was a founding member and activities director of the Loch Sheldrake Senior Citizens and noted for her trips. She was also a past member of the Sullivan County Arts Council. She was a former committeeperson and Democratic delegate to the Fallsburg Democratic Party.

In recognition of her many community services, she was the recipient of the Governor Clinton Award given by the Fallsburg Masonic Lodge.

An advocate for the establishment and active fundraiser for many community projects, she was instrumental in the establishment of the Town of Fallsburg Library, the Sullivan County Dialysis Center, and Big Sky Productions.

She is survived by: a son and daughter-in-law, Kenneth H. Walter and Carol Montana of Grahamsville; a daughter and son-in-law, Michele Truitt and John Clark of Las Vegas, Nev.; four grandchildren, Nicole Persson and her husband, Mark, of San Rafael, Calif., Samuel H. Walter of Jersey City, Sabrina Mae Walter Decker and Michael of Monticello, and Sherstin and Steven Lommatzsch of Denver, CO, Ind.; four great-grandchildren, Ian and Adam Persson of San Rafael, CA, and Amalia and Alexander Decker of Monticello, NY; several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by two sisters, Lauretta Carswell and Ellen Lyons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Alice C. Walter Scholarship Fund, c/o Loch Sheldrake Senior Citizens, PO Box 248, Loch Sheldrake, NY 12759 to benefit Trivalley and Fallsburg High School students.

Services will be held at the convenience of the family, and burial will take place in the Hurleyville Cemetery in Hurleyville. A celebration of Alice's life is planned for a future date.
