Archimandrite Tikhon Amelchenya

Archimandrite Tikhon Amelchenya formerly known as Michael Melchick, passed away on Saturday, February 10, 2018 in Manhattan, NY; before his illness he was appointed chief of the ROCOR Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem. He was 71.

The son of the late John and Louise Haberland Melchick, he was born January 30, 1947 in Liberty, NY.

Michael was known as a talented linguist, speaking English, Russian, Old Slovakian, and was a Latin Scholar.  He had served at St. Nikolas Russian Orthodox Cathedral in New York City.  Michael committed his life to religion at an early age, he served as an altar boy at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church in Liberty, NY.

Survivors include two brothers, John Melchick and his wife Judy of Livingston Manor, NY and Fred Melchick of Parksville, NY; several nieces and nephews; and a dear friend and mentor, Monsignor Robert Stern of the Roman Catholic Church.

He was predeceased by one brother, Stephen P. Melchick.

Graveside services and burial will be on Thursday, February 15, 2018 at 10 AM in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Cold Spring Road, Liberty, NY.  Monsignor Robert Stern will officiate.
