Charles A. Barnes of Ft. Pierce, FL and Roscoe, NY passed into God's care at Grace Rehabilitation Center, Vero Beach, FL on December 18, 2013. He was 89.
The son of the late Harry and Edith Sibley Barnes, he was born June 18, 1924 in the Town of Colchester, NY.
After attending high school, he attended the US Maritime Academy at Fort Schuyler, NY. He then served with the Merchant Marines during the latter part of WWII.
He married the former Jean DeVantier on April 24, 1948 and remained so for 65 years until Jean's death in July 2013.
A retired assistant civil engineer for the NYCDEP, he was on site during the construction of the Cannonsville Reservoir, a link in New York City's water system.
Music and golf were major interests in Charles' life. From trombone in high school, he went on to play and modify a number of instruments through the years. Pre and post retirement, he took up golf, played at any opportunity and refurbished clubs for decades.
After retirement, Jean and Charles trekked to and from their New York and Florida homes for 29 years until their health failed.
Charles is survived by a daughter, Laura, with him prior to his death; a son, Michael (Roxanne); a sister-in-law, Dorothy DeVantier; three grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and five nephews and nieces.
He was predeceased by his wife, Jean; a brother, Harry; a son-in-law, James Niforatos; and an infant son in 1950.
A memorial service and burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery, Roscoe, NY, in the Spring.
Memorial contributions in his name may be made to a charity of one's choice.
