Charles A. Obst of Swan Lake, NY, formerly of Spring Valley, NY and originally from Dickson City, PA, died Saturday, June 11, 2016 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris, NY. He was 99.
The son of the late John and Antoinette Dombrowski Obst, he was born January 30, 1917 in Dickson City, PA.
Charles was married to Bertha Mikuszewski Obst for 57 years and had three sons. His beloved wife passed away in 2003. Charles had worked for Lederle Labs in Pearl River, NY for 38 years as a plumber and steamfitter. Upon retirement, Charles and Bertha moved to Swan Lake, NY where they lived an active life, visiting family and friends, and participating in their church and senior citizen group. Charles also enjoyed maintaining his home, gardening, woodworking, and keeping up with current events and sports. Over the years, he dedicated himself to carving beautiful wooden crucifixes which he gave to many family members and friends. After his wife's death, Charles continued to live at home for many years with loving support from his son, Paul and his wonderful health aides, Cecylia Szeflinski and the late Rita McCarthy.
Charles proudly served Our Country in the US Army during World War II as an infantryman; he was awarded a Purple Heart.
Survivors include his three sons, John Obst and his wife Kathy, Robert Obst and his wife Barbara, and Paul Obst; four grandchildren, Ryan Obst, Lauren Capuano, Kimberly Perone, and Jessica Jones; three great grandchildren, Payton and Hudson Jones and Jack Perone.
He was predeceased by his wife, Bertha Mikuszewski Obst in 2003; one sister, Antoinette Pezanowski; and three brothers, Joseph Obst, Edmond Obst, and Frank Obst.
Visitation will be Friday, June 17, 2016 from 4-7 PM in the Harris Funeral Home, West St. at Buckley, Liberty, NY.
Mass of Christian Burial will be Celebrated Saturday, June 18, 2016 at 10 AM in St. George's Roman Catholic Church, Jeffersonville, NY. Father Ignatius Vu will officiate.
Burial with military honors will be in the Calvary Cemetery, Youngsville, NY. IGNATIUS VU
Memorial contributions in his name may be made to the St. George's Roman Catholic Church, PO Box 672, Jeffersonville, NY 12748.
