Edward W. Bamberger of Liberty NY died peacefully on Friday, April 6, 2012 at Good Samaritan Hospital, Suffern, NY. He was 83 years old.

Edward was born in NYC on January 24, 1929; he was the son of the late Edward and Margaret (Sommers) Bamberger.

The name Edward means "Faithful Guardian". He was a true member of "The Greatest Generation" serving in the American Merchant Marine and the U.S. Armed Forces in World War II. In 1981, he took disability retirement after 28-years as a NYPD officer. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather.

Ed moved to Liberty area in 1981. He loved Sullivan County and served his community and his environment to the best of his ability. He loved his country and its constitution.

He is survived by his wife of twenty-years, Sharon Space-Bamberger of Liberty. Also, his son Christopher (Maureen) Bamberger of Mohegan Lake NY, and his daughter Lisa Diamond of Carmel, NY. He leaves 5 grandchildren: Gina (Paul) Hendry, Melissa (Sutton) Evans-Younger, Anthony Diamond, Serena Diamond and Christopher Bamberger, Jr. and 3 great-grandchildren: Breanna Valdes, Derek Evans, Jr. and Shayla Younger.

He was predeceased by his parents, his first wife: Sarafina (Mattioli) Bamberger and his infant great- grandson Sean Younger

Edward was a friend of Bill W. since 1977 and has helped many others reach recovery. He was a NRA Benefactor, a member of the NYS Rifle & Pistol Club, Warwarsing Rod & Gun Club life member, 40-year member and Vice-President of the Sullivan County Conservation Club. He was also a member and officer of both Hudson Valley American Merchant Marine Group in Matamorus, Pa. and the Gene De Long Merchant Marine Group in Newburgh. He was Past Trustee and Veteran's Chair of the Liberty Elks Lodge #1545.

Ed was a faithful attendee of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Liberty. He last took communion the day before his death and knelt before his Lord. He had planned on becoming a St. Paul's member on Easter Sunday but God took his weary body home.

Visitation will be Thursday, April 12, 2012 from 4 - 6:30 PM in the Harris Funeral Home, 115 West Street at Buckley, Liberty, NY.

Liberty Elks Lodge #1545 will conduct services Thursday, April 12, 2012 at 6:30 PM followed by the Merchant Marines Crossing the Bar Service and then a memorial service in the funeral home. The Rev. Johanna Andritz will officiate.

It was Ed's expressed wish to be cremated and to be buried at sea.

Memorial contributions in Ed's name may be made to the Sullivan County Conservation Club, P.O. Box 9, Monticello, NY 12701.
