Elizabeth Hanofee

Elizabeth A. Hanofee of Liberty, NY passed away peacefully on September 10, 2014 after a ten year challenge with cancer. Elizabeth Ann Pauline Carpenter was the daughter of former British film star Lorna Duveen and cinematographer Lee Roy Carpenter. She was born in Newark, New Jersey on September 7, 1937 and spent most of her younger years in her beloved city of Manhattan. Known affectionately as Liz or Lilibet to friends and family, she was educated at the Lenox School For Girls in New York City and after graduation attended The Art Student League. She enjoyed summers in the Catskills at the family home called Stony Brook where she kept her horse, Lady . It was in Ferndale, NY that she met and later married the late Sullivan County Family Court/County Court Judge Eugene M. Hanofee who predeceased her in 1990. Her brother Lionel Roy Carpenter predeceased her in 2005. Elizabeth was a brilliant artist, seamstress, fabulous cook (an avid collector of hundreds of cookbooks) and hostess. She could tackle any problem with determination and complete any project, artistic or otherwise, with perfection. She loved driving and taking road trips. She also traveled extensively with her husband to Europe, Australia, Egypt and other countries. Always a wonderful friend, she was the first to arrive with a cake or casserole in times good or bad, and she enjoyed good old fashioned chats to her friends daily on the telephone. She is survived by her beloved daughters, Heather Elizabeth Hanofee of Warwick, NY and Deirdre C. Friedland of Salem, CT, her very dear son in law Eric Friedland, and her precious grandchildren Lauren and Craig Friedland as well as many friends and family members. Per her wishes, there will be private cremation. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to the SPCA or to a charity of your choice.
