Evelyn E. Peters

Evelyn Hawley Peters, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on Sunday, December 15, 2024, at the age of 94. She was born on March 20, 1930, in Callicoon, NY to Gerald Hawley and Charlotte “Lottie” Diehl Hawley.

Evelyn was one of 12 children and grew up in Equinunk, PA. She graduated from Hancock High School and married Russell Peters, Jr. on September 8, 1952. Together they raised six children on their dairy farm in North Branch, NY and their family grew to include 17 grandchildren, and 29 great-grandchildren. They were her pride and joy, and her home was adorned with many photographs.

Evelyn and Russell owned and operated Peters’ Auction Barn in Jeffersonville, NY where visitors from far and wide would come to find flea market treasures and interesting conversation.

Their time at the Auction Barn was depicted in the Sullivan County Democrat by local artist, Roger Baker, in 2017 as one of “The Barns of Sullivan County.” Evelyn was an avid collector of antiques, knick-knacks, jewelry, and colored glass. She was an amazing cook and baker for which there were no written recipes, and her family cherished her holiday dinners, pies, cookies, and fudge. She brought out the best in everyone and she will truly be missed.

Evelyn is survived by her loving husband of 72 years, Russell Peters, Jr., her children Cindy Barnes and companion Hank Danelli, Debbie Tuttle, Craig Peters and his wife Betty, Gary Peters and his wife Nancy, Steven Peters, and Rosemary Peters. Her grandchildren Joshua Barnes, Todd Barnes, Kelly (Ryan) Vinton, Jason (Lauren) Hornung, Joseph (Shannon) Hornung, Dale “DJ” Tuttle, Jr. (Tegan Carter), Corey Tuttle (Shelby Milewski), Shaun (Bobbie Sue) Peters, Ryan Peters, Scott (Lauren) Peters, Michael Peters, Charlotte (Jacob) Schwartz, Catherine (David) Kusicki, Henry Peters, Anthony Barotti, Bryan (Kayla) Lopez, and William Lopez. Her great-grandchildren Brady Barnes, Ryan Vinton, Logan Vinton, Evan Hornung, Dayla Jones, Emma Hornung, Paisley Tuttle, Ryland Carter, Robbie Lee Carter, Ruby Peters, Keith Peters, Taylor Brantlee, Braxton Peters, Kaylie Peters, Mylie Peters, Reagan Peters, London Peters, Hampton Peters, Murphy Peters, Warren Schwartz, Nathan Schwartz, Tyler Schwartz, Miles Kusicki, Colin Kusicki, Christopher Barotti, Samantha Barotti, Luna Lopez, Enzo Lopez, and Cruz Lopez. Her siblings Everitt Hawley (her twin), Joyce Hellmers, Lois Kooch, and Mark Hawley.

Evelyn was predeceased by her parents Gerald and Lottie Hawley, son-in-law Ronnie Barnes, son-in-law Dale “Doc” Tuttle, and her siblings Eleanor Keesler, Harold Hawley, Gladys McCormick, Grace Mills, Clayton Hawley, Lowell Hawley, and Marion Daub.

Visitation will be Friday, December 20, 2024 from 11 AM to 12 Noon in the Harris Funeral Home, West St. at Buckley, Liberty, NY. Funeral services will begin at 12 Noon in the funeral home. Pastor Joseph LeConey will officiate. Burial will follow in the Heavenly Rest Cemetery, North Branch, NY.
