Gene Barbanti

Gene Louis Barbanti of Liberty, NY, the owner and president of the Barbanti Group, Liberty, NY and a long time area resident, died Saturday, June 17, 2017 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center, Harris, NY.  He was 92.

The son of the late Jean Francis and Sophie Balestra Barbanti, he was born May 17, 1925 in Brooklyn, NY.

Gene was a founding member of the Liberty Museum and Art Center; a long time member and past chairman of the Town of Liberty Planning Board; a member of the Village of Liberty, Zoning Board; a member of the Sullivan County IDA and had been an instructor at Sullivan County BOCES where he taught heavy equipment operation.

Survivors include his wife, Etta M. Schleiermacher Barbanti, at home; four step daughters, Joyce Garder of Hackettstown, NJ, Carole Dunn of Forked River, NJ, Christine Jacques and her husband Mark of Atlanta, GA and Tami VanLeuven and her husband John of Liberty, NY; one step son, Scott Simpson and his wife Debbie of Liberty, NY; one sister, Dorothy Elizabeth Barbanti of West Milford, NJ; his grandchildren, Matthew, Christopher, Michael, Austyn, Jacquie, Joann, Jennifer, Peter, Lynn, Matthew, Erin, Jeffrey, and Rachael; his great grandchildren, Billy, Samantha, Nicole, John, Tommy, Courtney, Dillon, Sabrina, David, Danny, Kevin, Kate, Peter; one great great grandchild, Catherine; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his first wife, Evelyn Bush Barbanti; and two sons, Gene Louis Barbanti, Jr. and Keith Lawrence Barbanti.

Visitation will be Wednesday, June 21, 2017 from 4-8 PM in the Harris Funeral Home, West St. at Buckley, Liberty, NY.

Funeral services will be Thursday, June 22, 2017 at 11 AM in the funeral home.  Pastor Virginia Bossley will officiate.
