George J. Dexheimer

George Dexheimer of Neversink, New York peacefully passed on to be with the Lord, in the comfort of his home, on February 26, 2025. He was 95 years old.

George was born in Goshen, NY to the late Harold and Elizabeth Werner Dexheimer formerly of Liberty, NY. He was married for 71 years to his Liberty HS sweetheart Carol Nielsen Dexheimer who passed in 2024.

He attended Liberty High School where he was active in the music department and valued on the football team. After graduating from High School, George served in the Air Force and in the Air Force Reserves, Korean War Era, earning a rank of Airman First Class. He was stationed in Greenland and often spoke of his responsibilities to keep the generators running.

George began his working career at an early age assisting at his father’s service station in Liberty. This experience influenced and developed his character traits of always being on time, doing his best work and helping anyone who needed assistance. The Dexheimer name in his community was synonymous with fair, honest and hard work.

While he had many additional part time jobs over the years, he retired after 36 years from the NY City Department of Environmental Protection with the Board of Water Supply.

Whether you knew him as George, Little Dex, Dexie, Dex, Dad, Grandpa or Pop, he lived a life rich in service to his family and his community. His strong work ethic and civic mindedness was a lifelong guiding force as was demonstrated by the numerous community organizations he strongly supported. He was also known as the person to call when help was needed whether that was for muscle, transportation, a meal, companionship, or a lawn that needed to be mowed, he would be there. He was a long-time member of Saint Paul's Lutheran Church serving in many capacities through the years and with a strong and powerful voice from the choir. It was during a church service and from that choir loft that he first saw his beloved Carol. He turned to his long-time choir partner, Vernon Beeseth, and said “I’m going to marry that girl”.  He did so in May 1952.

George was a 78-year member of the JC Young Hose Co. (Liberty Fire Dept), as well as a 65-year member of the Neversink Fire Department and served on the Neversink Ambulance squad. He was a well-respected member of the NYS Association of Fire Chaplins.  George belonged to the Free and Accepted Masons, Sullivan Lodge #0521 for 71 years and served as a past District Deputy. He was so very proud and honored to be presented with his 70-year Masonic apron at a moving ceremony in March 2024. He was a member of the Liberty Elks Lodge #1545 as well as the American Legion Albany Post #1.

George is survived by his six children: Donna Myers (William), Christine Wegrzyn (Lori), Susan Manning (Paul), Alice Karsko (Mike), Tim Dexheimer (Tina) and Tom Dexheimer (Michelle). Pop took great pride in his 15 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and was loved by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He was predeceased by his sister Margaret Sherwood of Loudonville, NY
