Lorelei Mary Schonbachler

“Do not go gentle into that good night. Rage, rage against the dying of the light”

Lorelei Mary Schonbachler (Albert) of Liberty, NY passed away peacefully in her home the evening of March 12, 2025. She was 72.

The daughter of Marie and Leroy Albert, Lorelei was born on April 9th, 1952. She was born and raised in Bushwick, Brooklyn. After graduating high school in 1969 from Christ the King in Queens, NY, Lorelei attended Adelphi University on a full scholarship for Theater Arts and Speech Therapy. Lorelei spent summers at their family home in Youngsville and moved there full-time in 1969; she always had a love for the Catskills.

Lorelei’s love for theater was prominent for many decades. She was incredibly active in Community Theater in Sullivan and Orange County, including the Sullivan County Dramatic Workshop and the Forestburgh Playhouse. Lorelei also designed numerous theater programs and taught in the local school districts. In addition, to educating students K-12, she also was an adjunct professor at the Sullivan County Community College where she designed and taught Theater I & II. Lorelei took part in many independent films, charged with casting, managing and prop assembly.

In addition to the legacy she leaves on the theater community, she also had a variety of other passions. Lorelei was a woman of all seasons; she loved skiing, swimming, and hiking. She had a captivating knowledge of the first hotels and the hiking trails in the Catskill Mountains. Lorelei constantly strove to expose her daughters to wonderful adventures. Along with her love for the outdoors, Lorelei was an avid reader, as well as a talented crocheter, crafter and seamstress.

Lorelei is survived by her loving and dedicated husband Carl Schonbachler of Liberty; loving daughters, Rachel Rausch (Leland) of Liberty, Jennifer Lindsley (Ryan) of Florida, and Lorelei Boxberger (Ryan) of Bethel; and her beautiful granddaughters, Gwendolyn, Sonora, and Amaryllis Boxberger. Lorelei is also survived by her two sisters Elizabeth Wallace of New Jersey, Catherine George (Joseph) of Idaho, several nieces and nephews, and her dog Riley.

In addition to her parents, Lorelei was predeceased by her brother-in-law Joseph Wallace.
