Maria Elena Alvarado of Middletown, NY, a retired Licensed Practical Nurse and a longtime area resident died Friday, March 24, 2017 at the Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown, NY. She was 76.

The daughter of the late Pedro and Maria Consales Torchio, she was born December 29, 1940 in Santiago, Chile.

Maria is a former family care provider; she had been a Girl Scout Leader; an Adult Literacy Volunteer and PreCana Councilor at St. Joseph's Church in Carteret, NJ. While studying as an art major she met the man who would become her husband. She was an accomplished artist and enjoyed creative writing, knitting and was a fantastic cook.

Survivors include her husband, Herbert Alvarado at home; one son, Andres Alvarado and his wife Mary Walsh of Watertown, MA; three daughters, Lorena Alvarado of Middletown, NY, Susana Alvarado and her

husband Paul David of Mongaup Valley, NY, and Cecilia DeCotes and her husband Todd of Roscoe, NY; four sisters, Flora Torchio, Daria Torchio and Lilian Torchio, all of Chile and Carolina Skarica and her husband Ivan of Carteret, NJ; six grandchildren, Samanatha DeCotes, Amanda DeCotes, Paul Martin, Emily Martin, Kyle DeCotes and Aidan Alvarado; two great grandchildren, Emma and Isla.

Visitation will be Monday, March 27, 2017 from 4-7 PM in the Harris Funeral Home West St. at Buckley, Liberty, NY.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at 11 AM in the funeral home. Father Edward Bader will officiate.
