Maureen MacDonnell, of The Care Center at Sunset Lake in Liberty, NY passed away on December 10, at the age of 88. She was born on April 25, 1936, in the Bronx, NY, to the late David and Mary (MacDougall) MacDonnell.
Maureen or “Moe” as she was affectionately called by her friends grew up in Washington Heights, NY attended the Incarnation School and loved being a “city kid” even having her car license plate as “NYC-K1D”.
She lived a colorful life filled with many friends, family and fur babies! Living in Manhattan she worked as a bartender and manager at The Candlelight Bar, The Piccadilly, and was the owner of The Halfbreed and ran G’s Bottoms Up Social Club.
She is predeceased by her longtime partner Georgia Fleenor, her brother David MacDonnell, and her sister Dolores Hostomsky (MacDonnell). She is survived by her brother Allen MacDonnell of Sun City, Florida. In addition, “Aunt Maureen” is survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews, all whom loved her dearly. She will fondly be remembered for playing Santa Claus for all the kids and adults at Christmas parties.
She spent many years living in New York City but moved to upstate NY during the early 90s. There she worked as a custodian in the schools, a house painter, and worked at the Youngsville Veterinary Hospital in Liberty, NY. She will be remembered for her love of animals, always saving stray cats, dogs, baby raccoons, and even owned and cared for a couple horses. If the legend of the Rainbow Bridge is true Moe will be greeted by a parade of animals likened to Noah’s Ark.
She loved the movies and enjoyed all the snacks and candy that went along with it. She was outgoing and friendly, known to strike up a conversation with strangers, and become fast friends. She also loved to follow astrology and had the personality of a true Taurus.
Moe had a good time wherever she went and made the best of her time at the Care Center where she loved to draw and take part in actives until her health began to fail. She was a true free-spirit, her jovial way and twinkle in her eye will be missed by her family, friends and all who knew her.
In lieu of a service or flowers her family asks for donations to be made to an animal shelter of your choosing in honor of her memory.
