Morton Sunshine, born April 8th, 1918, son of Ida Stillerman Sunshine and Samuel Sunshine, left this earth on April 26, 2012 at Achieve Rehab and Nursing Facility in Liberty, NY with his family by his side. He was 94 years old.
Our Dad was born and raised in the Bronx, NY for all his childhood years. He graduated from DeWitt Clinton High School and Brooklyn College. He went to war to fight for his country from 1941 - 1945 reaching the rank of second lieutenant. During those years he had a pen-palAaA Gladys Sunshine Seiden and met her face to face on one of his leaves. They fell in love and were married October 28th, 1945 shortly after he mustered out of the US Army. He went to work for her father, Frank Seiden in Lido Beach, NY, Palm Beach, FL and Lakewood, NJ until he went out on his own and into advertising and publicity. He went back into the hotel business and opened The Doral Hotel and CC in Miami and then went on to open hotels in Puerto Rico and Mexico. He then came to the Catskills in 1964 when Jennie Grossinger asked him to "help out" after Harry passed away. He never left. He was the general manager of Grossinger's for 7 ½ years. He was also the GM at the Granite in Kerhonkson. He always had a passion to teach so he got his Master's degree at Empire College and taught at both Sullivan Correctional Facility and Woodbourne Prison for many years. He was so very happy teaching. He then became a NYS inspector at Monticello Raceway testing horses for drugs. He also raised Great Danes for several years. Upon retiring he spent time reading, caring for his dogs and spending time with his wife.
He is survived by his daughter Francine; son Jonathan and his wife Patti Greco-Sunshine, his grandsons Jamey Sunshine (Abby) and David Sunshine (Katy) and his nieces Lori Engber Levin and Jane Seiden Jasper and several grand nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his wife Gladys, December 4th, 2008, his parents, Ida and Samuel, his sister and brother-in-law Evelyn and Sam Engber and his in-laws Eva and Frank Seiden.
Dad you were our Patriarch and our friend. We will miss you forever. We are comforted to know you will be with Mom who you adored for more than 63 years and your dogs. Go in peace until we meet again.
The family would like to thank Jay Zelman, Director and all the staff and personnel at Achieve for the round-the-clock care given to our father for almost 4 years. You are all wonderful.
Cremation was private. Services may be at a later date.
