Myrtle Zurawski

Myrtle Sager Zurawski succumbed to the effects of Alzheimer's Disease and deteriorating health over the past several months,  and went home peacefully to the Lord on November 2, 2018.  She was in the care of her loving family members and the wonderful staff of the Richmond County Hospice Haven in Rockingham, North Carolina.

Myrtle was born in Liberty, NY on October 2, 1926 to the late John Sager and Kathryn Schriever Sager.   She was a Class of 1944 graduate of Liberty High School.   With her husband Frank Zurawski, she co-owned Zuro-Jetcrete  Corp.  based in Liberty, NY.  They built high quality Gunite Swimming Pools throughout the region for 30 years. Upon selling the business in 1982,  Myrtle began volunteering as a classroom aide at Liberty Elementary School,  and in recognition of her caring and passionate work with the children, was honored by the Liberty PTA as a lifetime member. She was soon hired as a reading aide to physically disabled and ESL children.  She also was a Laubach Literacy  Volunteer, and tutored many adults in reading and writing, and was awarded the prestigious Laubach Literacy award in 1996.  Upon retirement from the school district in 1996, she went to work for the Liberty Public Library for several years as an assistant to the Librarian.

Myrtle had a passion for her Lord and St. Paul's Lutheran Church, and was a past Church Council member, Sunday School Superintendent, and committee member. She was an accomplished artist and enjoyed oil painting and #2 pencil portraits.  She loved  nature, travel, reading, yard work, rock n' roll music and sports,  especially NASCAR.   At 73,  with the help of her son John, she was able to realize one of her dreams and drive a NASCAR stockcar at Pocono Raceway reaching speeds in excess of 160 MPH.   She also enjoyed many trips to Asia and Europe with her son Glenn,  and past visits to New Mexico and  frequent trips to Albany, N.Y. To spend great quality time with her daughter Karen.   During the past 6 years she spent the majority of her time in North Carolina with her son John and Linda,  living at her house by the lake, enjoying the beautiful natural setting and abundant wildlife.

Myrtle is predeceased by her parents;  her husband, Frank J. Zurawski; her sister, Kathryn M. Sager; and her son, Glenn F. Zurawski, MD.

Survivors include her daughter, Karen Zurawski of Albany, N.Y.; her son, John Zurawski and his fiancée Linda Helms; her brother in law, Walter J. Zuraski, Jr of Manville, NJ; nephew, John Burke of Fairview NJ; one niece,  Veronica DeSena of Barnegart, NJ; and numerous other loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and close friends.

Visitation will be Thursday, November 8, 2018 from 5 to 8 PM in the Harris Funeral Home, West St. at Buckley, Liberty, NY.

Funeral services will be Friday, November 9, 2018 at 12 Noon in St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Chestnut Street, Liberty, NY.  The Rev. Johanna Andritz will officiate.

Burial will be in the Liberty Cemetery, Liberty, NY.
