Nathaniel E. Johnson of Livingston Manor, NY, a retired chemist for Union Carbide, Indianapolis, IN died Sunday, April 3, 2016 at the Achieve Rehab and Nursing Facility, Liberty, NY. He was 89.
The son of the late Nathaniel and Louise McDaniel Johnson, he was born July 27, 1926 in Rome, GA.
Nate was a graduate of Wittenberg University; he was a letter carrier and later used his science degree in manufacturing. He moved to New York and worked in homeless shelters for ten years before retirement. Nate's biggest concern was education for himself and his sons and he made sure they understood the importance of pursuing it. He loved classical music, the opera, and was a very fine wood sculptor and extremely knowledgeable in astronomy, science, and fine arts.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Dina Hope Johnson, at home; three sons, Gregory Johnson and his wife Claire of Nyack, NY, Fritz Johnson and his wife Yuki of New York City, NY, and Christopher Johnson and his wife Wendy of New York City, NY; one step son, Daniel Porter of Phoenix, AZ; seven grandchildren; and two great grandchildren. He was predeceased by a step son, David Porter.
Graveside services and burial will be Thursday, April 7, 2016 at 11 AM at the Rockland Cemetery 201 Kings Highway, Sparkill, NY.
