Stavros Niforatos

Stavros “Papou” Niforatos of Roscoe and Monticello, NY, a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, friend, and a long time resident of Sullivan County died Friday, March 19, 2021. He was 90.

The son of the late Anastasios and Athena Niforatos, he was born July 22, 1930 in Cephalonia, Greece.

Some of you knew “Papou” as a considerate, loving, compassionate man, who always cared for his family. You might remember him sitting in the dining room at the Blue Horizon Diner watching the comings and goings, or sitting at the counter greeting his friends and long time customers.

In his earlier years in Greece, he was a shepherd. He left Greece in 1955, after serving the Greek Army. His first stop was Newark, NJ where he worked in factories. In Newark, he met his late wife, Elli and they married in 1960. Later, he started a lunch truck business, where he worked vigorously to build a life for his family. In 1969, Stavros bought the Roscoe Diner. Stavros and Elli moved to Roscoe, NY in 1971, with their two children, Maria and Tasse. In 1986, Stavros built the Blue Horizon Diner in Monticello, NY. He made many lasting friendships and connections with people through his businesses.

He was predeceased by his wife, Elli Niforatos; his brother Andreas Niforatos; and his son-in-law John Kyprianou.

Survivors include his daughter, Maria Kyprianou and her partner, Turgay Terzi of Monticello, NY; his son, Anastasios “Tasse” Niforatos and his wife, Cheri of Roscoe, NY; four grandchildren, Elli Kyprianou of Monticello, NY, Stavros Niforatos, Athena Niforatos, and Anastasia Niforatos of Roscoe, NY; his sister, Maria Pollatos of Long Island, NY; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Visitation will be Wednesday, March 24, 2021 from 4 to 7 PM in the Harris Funeral Home Railroad Ave. Roscoe, NY. Funeral services will be Friday, March 26, 2021 at 11 AM in the St. Gerasimos Greek Orthodox Church, St. Gerasimos Drive, Roscoe, NY. Burial will be in the Riverview Cemetery, Roscoe, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Saint Nektarios Greek Orthodox Monastery in Roscoe, NY, Kiwanis Club of Monticello, NY, Roscoe Cares of Roscoe, NY, Roscoe-Rockland Fire Dept. or Roscoe-Rockland Ambulance Corp. in Roscoe, NY.
