Virginia “Ginny” Buddenhagen Guglielmone of Callicoon, New York (with previous addresses in Oakdale, New York and Long Beach, New York) died on Friday April 18, 2025. She was almost 87 years young.
She is survived by her children, Daniel H. Guglielmone of North Bethesda, Maryland, Karen Virginia Guglielmone of Telluride, Colorado and Lisa Guglielmone Gillis (married to Frederick "Rick" Gillis) of Chicago, Illinois as well as her grandchildren Samantha Marie Leonard, Christian Joseph Gillis, Ethan William Gillis, Francesca Guglielmone Gillis, Grace Louise Guglielmone and Elizabeth Moira-Anne Guglielmone plus many, many nieces and nephews.
Ginny was preceded in death by her husband, Tito Walter Guglielmone, her parents Herbert Frederick Buddenhagen and Kathleen Thelma Davenport Buddenhagen as well as all of her siblings (Mary Etta Buddenhagen Hornicek, Kathleen E. Moran, Ross Herbert Buddenhagen and Daniel D. Buddenhagen).
Ginny was born on July 14, 1938, in Callicoon, New York at the Callicoon Hospital. She is a graduate of Delaware Valley Central School in Callicoon, New York. She earned both a Bachelor of Arts degree and a master’s degree from the New York State College for Teachers in Albany, New York (now University at Albany, SUNY) after graduating from high school just one month shy of her 17th birthday. During her college years, she was a member of the Gamma Kappa Phi Sorority. It was in Albany where she met the love of her life, Tito. She was standing in line to register for classes in support of her master’s degree. Tito was on that very same line, having just come back from two years in Germany with the U.S. Army. They married in August 1960 and started their family shortly thereafter.
Ginny enjoyed a distinguished career in education with the Sayville Union Free School District in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York while simultaneously raising three children. Upon retirement, Ginny loved to spend time with her grandchildren on Long Island and in Chicago. She also loved to travel across the United States and around the globe with Tito, friends, and/or family. Those travels took her to Florida every year to avoid the cold, grey Callicoon winters and to Italy many times over to visit her Italian family by marriage in Montemarcello on the Ligurian coast of the Mediterranean Sea.
Ginny will best be known for her profound love of “home” on the Delaware River in Callicoon, New York. Many family and friends stopped by over the years for great music and lively conversation on the front porch with snacks and their beverage of choice. Yes, she moved the gathering spot from the garage to the porch after Tito passed!
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, May 3, 2025 at 11 AM in Holy Cross Church, 9719 State Route 97, Callicoon. Ginny’s brother-in-law, the Most Reverend Robert E. Guglielmone, 13th Bishop of Charleston in South Carolina, will officiate. It will be followed by a private graveside service at the Hortonville Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place from 1pm to 4pm.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a memorial contribution in Ginny's name to the Delaware Youth Center, 8 Creamery Rd, Callicoon, NY 12723 (1-845-887-5155) or to the Hortonville Presbyterian Church, County Route 131, Hortonville, NY 12745.
